Getting Ready

Here’s the official logo for CRAPARO-DABBS WORLD RECORD trip.

And they’re off!  Now that they’re on their way, John and Dayton will be doing most of the posts, but will be staying in touch with me, so feel free to let me know if I can answer any questions.

Day 1

Saturday, October 3, 2015

Cross Country Estates - Georgetown, TX to Love Field, DALLAS TX

Miles flown this day: 142

Total miles flown: 142

Thanks to Scott Thomas for the pre-take off PIX.

Day 2

Sunday, October 4, 2015

Love Field - DALLAS TX to LAKE HAVASU AZ

Miles flown this day: 900

Total miles flown: 1042

I got a message from Rob at 04:15 this morning that he and Sean completed the required weighing of the gyro and it came in a few pounds underweight, so Dayton and John were cleared for take-off around 04:30. They were smart to weigh in before throwing in that box of Krispy Kremes.  At 09:35 Sunday  10-04-15,  track shows them in Roswell NM.  Hopefully, they’re getting some shots that we can post later today.

Rob just sent these pix from Sunday morning’s gyro weigh-in. Check out John wiggling in to that flight suit – also known as  the Craparo Disco.

Day 3

Monday, October 5, 2015

LAKE HAVASU AZ to SANTA MONICA CA

Miles flown this day: 208

Total miles flown: 1250

Day 4

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

Santa Monica, CA to Flagstaff, AZ

Miles flown this day: 341

Total miles flown: 1591

Dayton updating here.  We didn’t make it quite as far as we would have liked today, but we made progress.  We started the day by changing the oil in the gyro at Santa Monica.  We owe big thanks to Rick Song for providing a few oil filters that he happened to have on hand.  After changing the oil and getting a bunch of loose ends tied up, we took off just after 2:00PM Pacific Time.  We had to dodge a few storms as we went through Eastern California/Western Arizona, but nothing too bad.  Because of the late start, we didn’t quite get through the mountains before nightfall.  We both began to show signs of hypothermia, so we decided to set down for the night in Flagstaff, AZ.  We plan on leaving Wednesday morning at 8:00AM Pacific Time with hopes of making it at least to central Kansas.

We have many more pictures to post that were taken with the other camera, but have no way of uploading them yet.  We will get them up as quickly as we can.

The record claim has been placed for the flight from Dallas to Los Angeles with a time of 35 hours and 35 minutes (thanks to clouds hanging over the mountains between Lake Havasu and Los Angeles).

We also wanted to take a moment to give a GIANT thank you to Business Jet Center in Dallas, and Desert Skies Aviation in Lake Havasu for being incredibly helpful well beyond what they were required to be.

Day 5

Wednesday, October 7, 2015

Flagstaff, AZ to Dodge City, KS

Miles flown this day: 588

Total miles flown: 2179

Day 6

Thursday, October 8, 2015

Dodge City, KS to New York, NY (LaGuardia)

Miles flown this day: 1160

Total miles flown: 3339

Here are a few pix from earlier this week when Dayton and John left Love Field in Dallas. Thanks, Ira, for sending them in.

Day 7

Friday, October 9, 2015

They made it to the BIG APPLE

Miles flown this day: 65

Total miles flown: 3404

I talked with Dayton at about 5:00 PM central time. He was on a subway headed to Manhattan. At 5:45 this morning, after a few hours of sleeping on a concrete hangar floor, and 65 miles from NY, they called LaGuardia to ask for a delayed arrival due to weather.  Tower said “you either make it here by 6;30 AM or postpone till Saturday”. They hopped in the Magni, and with the help of a strong tailwind, landed at LaGuardia at 6:35 AM. Cheers!

This morning we landed at LaGuardia Airport. We came in over a light cloud cover and made a landing on Runway 4. The control tower announced during landing that an American Airlines flight should line up and wait on to 22 while we made our landing. Dayton was the pilot and we made a very nice touchdown before the first turn off which turned out to be the old Marine Air Terminal where the plane has been tied down. Prior to coming into LaGuardia. We we're delayed as we crossed the Midwest and eastern states. Our original plan was to spend an hour or two at Morristown New Jersey in order to prep ourselves for the flight into the Class Bravo. That plan was thwarted as wee had to turn back due to heavy fog in central Pennsylvania. We relocated to a small, a very small, airport in eastern Pennsylvania where we spent about an hour sleeping on the concrete after refueling the plane, At about 5:30 am we prepped ourselves for the flight into LaGuardia. We had to be in before 6:30 a.m. in order to be sequenced with the light commercial traffic which would be ramping up throughout the day. As stated before, the FAA gave us expedited habdling in support of our record attempt. We have also been told this is likely the first ever landing of a gyroplane or Autogiro at KLGA. Attached are some photos that you might find interesting including the landing some mountain climbing over Arizona and New Mexico where we reached altitudes of up to 10,000 in the mountains. We also battled some storms which we skirted around for the most part but did get us in the aircraft a bit wet. Thus far we have had zero problems with the aircraft War of the engine oil has been running perfectly. On Sunday we should leave for Dallas to complete the third leg of what we hope become official world setting marks for gyroplanes on recognized courses. I'm a bit tired now so I'll sign off for the night I will update this further over the weekend.. As always thanks for your support.
