Trip Overview

Taylor TX to Alpine TX (West Texas)

October 10, 2015 — October 12, 2015

We’re flying to the MAVERICK INN in Alpine Texas. The Maverick is called “A Roadhouse for Wanderers”.  As always, the date and who’s going are subject to change. It’s about 700 miles (round trip), so it should be two days of great flying across West Texas.

Planning to take off from Taylor at 09:00 Saturday morning. Chandler has confirmed that he’s in, so we’ll be flying my M16 together.

Thanks for following

ENJOY THE JOURNEY!

If you guys end up adding a night to the trip and staying in Marfa, too, stay at El Cosmico.

What a great day! KathyD saw us take off from Taylor at about 10:00 AM. Weather ranged from low 80's down to 50's in the mountains - had to climb to almost 7000' to clear the mountains near Alpine. We watched the terrain change from the Colorado River in Marble Falls to the hills around Enchanted Rock, then finally the West Texas desert and Mountains. People have been beyond friendly at the airports. Check out the EMS courtesy van we used in Sonora and the fine red ride the Alpine Airport gave us for the night. I'll be posting pix from today's flight in a few minutes. Thanks for following.

BB, we had dinner at the Century Bar and Grill in the Holland Hotel. It was like a scene out of a movie - with the courtyard fountain and lights strung across the trees, it was like turning back the clock 50 years.

It looks like you just made it to Marfa. If you go by El Cosmico, say "hi" to Laura, the receptionist. She's the daughter of my friend, Dirk, who is the President of Hyperwear.

Life moves slow in Alpine. We started the day with a walk around downtown, getting a couple of shots of local buildings, signs, and trains. Then, we took off from Alpine and climbed to 7000 ft to hop over the mountains to Marfa. There are only five or six spaces for planes at the Marfa airport and they were all taken up by business jets - in town for some sort of art festival. Anyway, we manged to squeeze our little Magni in to a space by the fuel pumps. After a short walk around downtown Marfa, we headed back to the airport where we took off about 1:00 PM. The flight was full of amazing scenery and we were able to capture several good shots of the mountains and plateaus of West Texas. After a fuel stop in Sonora, we completed our final 165 mile leg into Taylor at 6:10 in the afternoon. As beautiful as the scenery was, this trip had its share of challenges. Gyros just don't like flying in high, mountainous elevations. It taxes the limits of the aircraft and pilot just to stay in the air. And sometimes, there's not a lot of margin. But, we made it fine and having Chandler along to visit and share the adventure was a rare treat. Thanks for following along.
