Trip Overview

Taylor, TX to Hattiesburg and Natchez, MS (July 2016)

July 5, 2016 — July 31, 2016

  • Number of Days: 6
  • Total Miles: 1175

Natchez, MS is one of our favorite places to fly. It’s not too far (about 300 miles) and we can make it there in about five hours. The folks at the airport are friendly and accommodating. And, overall, it’s just a good place to enjoy good food and a relaxed life on the river. Kathy and I will spend a couple of days in Hattiesburg, then fly to Natchez for the weekend. Thanks for following!

Hattiesburg Magni Trip 7-2016 006meador_cabin-dean

The flight from Texas to Hattiesburg was an all day endeavor. We encountered heavy thunderstorms as we approached the Mississippi River from the west and had to divert north to CONCORDIA PARISH AIRPORT in Vidalia, LA. Carl Sayers, one of the local airport volunteers went out of his way to make our hour-plus layover pleasant. We got back in the air about five O’ clock and arrived at KPIB Hattiesburg at 6:30. The folks at US AVIATION had a slot waiting for us in their spacious hangar and got us on our way in their courtesy car. We arrived at  Meador Homestead Cabin in Hattiesburg about seven O’clock where owner Dean Meador Smith greeted us with her signature southern charm. We ended the day with Shrimp & Grits at Keg and Barrel on Hardy Street in Hattiesburg. A good way to end Day 1.

Our friend, Carl Sayers, who helped us wait out the storm at CONCORDIA PARISH AIRPORT in Vidalia, LA.

ARCHUSA CREEK WATER PARK

Archusa Creek Water Park – Quitman, MS

The Meador Homestead Cabin rests on several acres of woods, fields, and trails. It feels like it’s  miles from civilization, when in reality, the highway is less than a mile away. Dean Meador Smith is the perfect southern hostess. Breakfast includes fresh fruit, homemade waffles, cheese grits, and biscuits, all served in a barn style dining room. After breakfast with my brother Billy and his wife Donna, the day included non-stop flying, food, and family. We landed back in Hattiesburg  in time to join my son Chamberlan and his beautiful family for dinner at Sully’s. Day 2 was busy, but lots of fun.

Day 3

Thursday, July 7, 2016

Hattiesburg, MS to Natchez, MS (KHEZ)

Day 3 begin much like day 2, with homemade waffles, bacon and sausage at The Meador Homestead dining room. Mike Kuykendall and his wife Linda joined us for breakfast and a great visit. It had been over 35 years since we last saw them. They’re looking great and are as full of life as ever. About 10:00 AM, Kathy and I headed back to KPIB ariport where we turned in our car and loaded the gyro for the two hour flight to Natchez. We landed at KHEZ in Natchez around noon where we hangared the gyro and headed to ROUX 61 for a delicious creole lunch.  Gail Guido, who manages the River Edge Suites, had our apartment ready for check-in, just in time to watch the sun set over the Mississippi River Bridge. We had no trouble falling asleep at the end of Day 3.

Day 4

No flying planned today.

Jackson Miss ZOO

We began Day 4 at The Natchez Coffee Company with a traditional southern breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage, and biscuits. My dad used to enjoy visiting the Jackson Zoo and so do we. The scenic drive down Blues Highway 61 and Hwy 18 is a great way to capture the true essence of Mississippi.  The Jackson Zoo has improved a lot over the years. It’s clean, well maintained, and every bit as impressive as zoos in much larger cities. After lunch at ROOSTERS on North State Street, we headed south for the return to Natchez. By the end of Day 4, the trip was taking it’s toll. We opted out of dinner to sit on the balcony and watch the evening sun go down again over the Mississippi River.

Day 5

Saturday, July 9, 2016

Natchez, MS to Gonzales, LA (L38)

Miles flown this day: 0

Total miles flown: 775

Hattiesburg Magni Trip 7-2016 030GRAPEVINE CAFE DONALDSONVILLE LA

Day 5 found us back at The Natchez Coffee Company where we had a lighter breakfast of Cinnamon rolls and coffee. Then, we headed south on scenic Highway 61 toward Baton Rouge to meet our friends, Larry and Jackie Shirley for lunch  at The Grapevine Cafe in Donaldsonville, LA. What a great place. We started with gumbo, salads, and pork tenderloin, followed by white chocolate bread pudding and key lime pie. It was a a long drive for everyone, but well worth the effort to be able to visit old friends in such comfortable  surroundings. By the time we returned to Natchez, it was time to start packing our bags for the long flight back to Texas on Sunday.

Day 6

Sunday, July 10, 2016

Natchez, MS to Taylor, TX (T74)

Miles flown this day: 400

Total miles flown: 1175

DSC00025Dayton B'day 2

After a week of  Mississippi sunshine and heat, Sunday morning greeted us with thunderstorms moving in to Louisiana and Mississippi. We took off from Natchez at 7:45 AM and managed to dodge the storms until we got closer to Texas where the skies were friendlier. At about twenty miles out, we made our first call in to Taylor, Texas that we were inbound for landing. From about five hundred feet, we could see our son, Dayton, opening the hangar  doors to welcome us home and to return Magni Gyroplane N747KW to it’s safe slot in Hangar E6.

After taking a couple of hours to shower and change clothes, we drove to Pappasitos in Austin to celebrate Dayton’s birthday.  Happy Birthday Que Paso, from all of us at PAPPASITOS!

What a Day! What a week! What a trip!

Thanks for following!

Thanks, John. Made it to Hattiesburg about 6:30. FBO gave us overnight hangar space and a Lincoln to drive around. Not sure Craparo didn't call and let them know we were coming.
